Completed in 1865, The Cariboo Wagon Road was called “the eighth wonder of the world,” and was also described, in its early days, as “utterly impassable for any animal but a man, a goat, or a dog.” Today, the route is much improved, and you can leisurely drive the scenic routes of the Gold Rush Trail, which extends from Fort Langley to Cache Creek along Hwy 1, Cache Creek to Quesnel along Hwy. 97 and on to Barkerville an hour's drive down Hwy. 26. The end of the Gold Rush Trail is actually located approximately an hour and a half north of Quesnel near Prince George at the Huble Homestead Historic Site. When you are traveling the Gold Rush Trail make sure to stop in at Barkerville Historic Town - the Golden Nugget of the Gold Rush Trail - and see for yourself why it was named Best Large Provincial Attraction by Attractions Canada in 2001 & 2002. With a full slate of guided tours, street performers and live theatre planned again for the 2004 season this is one ghost town you don't want to miss! So pack up your bags this summer and head north to experience the history of the Gold Rush Trail and one of North America’s largest gold rushes – the rough, grimy and, at one time, treacherous route to the El Dorado of the 1860’s. | ||||||||||||
